While still a small sector of the local economy, green jobs hold potential for low-income residents as both a formative industry with large growth potential and provider of living wage jobs. Step Up Savannah works collaboratively to connect residents with green job training opportunities with immediate income potential.
What are Green Jobs?
Green jobs benefit the environment directly by producing goods or services that benefit the environment or conserve resources, or indirectly by helping organizations in conventional industries conserve resources.
What’s the approach?
Step Up Savannah works collaboratively to:
- Incorporate eco-literacy cost effectively into existing vocational curricula as an added feature for prospective employers
- Teach new skills to employed lower level workers in changing industries to help them remain valuable to their companies
- Develop green job training opportunities with foundational coursework in established industries to move under-skilled workers into the local economy, green or otherwise.
Recent Projects have included:
- Introduction to Green Building seminar in Chatham Apprentice Program
- Deconstruction training and project work
- Rain Barrel Installation training & project work
- Sustainable Woodworking internship & volunteering for community project
