Construction Apprentice Program

Program partners

  • Chatham County
  • Savannah Technical College
  • Step Up Savannah, Inc.

Program goal

To provide training to adults interested in jobs in the construction industry and to place them in on-the-job training opportunities with professional contractors. The goal is for participants to gain full-time employment with a contractor after completing classroom and on-the-job training.

This is a 26-week program. After several weeks in life-skills, work ethics and job-search training, participants work at job sites for contractors. Classes are held at community centers in Savannah. Participants are required to work 40 hours per week during the on-the-job training segment; Chatham County issues the stipend checks. The areas of construction covered are concrete forming and rough carpentry.

How it works

Students are enrolled at Savannah Technical College, where tuition and books may be covered by HOPE grants. Successful participants earn a Technical Certificate of Credit in Concrete Forming and will graduate from Savannah Technical College upon completion of class work and a four-week on-the-job training session.
