A GPB report aired  under the headline, “Census puts poverty programs in focus.” It's virtually a certainty that the poverty rate statewide and locally will rise due to the recession and long-term unemployment; unfortunately, Census data on poverty won't be released for some months. And while the federal government has spent millions on a range of poverty reduction efforts, state and local spending is substantially less.  The report is inconclusive, leaving more questions than answers.
