Are any new jobs good news?

Certainly. But a recent New York Times article reminds us that many of the new jobs added, in hospitality, home health care, retail, don't pay enough to cover basic costs of living, such as housing, transportation, utilities, and child care. It cites another study by Wider Opportunities for Women, which has been analyzing for some years what it takes to live (in various geographic areas) without public subsidies.  (See the "research" tab on our site for a related study on self sufficiency standards in Georgia, published in 2008, that includes Chatham and surrounding counties.)
